In 2017 Ryan asked Harley to give the new generation a chance with their long stong engines and come up with a plan faster than India does. Fast forward to today, Harley shuts down in India and they still suck.

Definitely agree that Harley is stuck between a rock and a hard place as far as forced into their nostalgic gimmicks and having modern tech, but everything on a cruiser style bike is a compromise between styling and performance. If you were that worried about performance you'd be on another style of bike to begin with because the cruiser platform is what it is. I guess that is what he's getting at with the Scout, which is a really cool looking bike. I'm content with my sportster. How much power do I really need?

It's staggering how Harley has doubled down on their hill to die on in so many ways. First only catering to baby boomers who are now ageing out of riding, and then following the stupid notions in regards to their powerplants as depicted in this video. The company will be out of business very soon at this rate...

Your apples to apples comparison is the scout to the V-Rod, and at least you mention the V-Rod. The V-Rod being 100cc less and heavier blows the scout away in every category. At the end, you finally recognized the main point--it's not about technology or the inability to design bikes with the latest technology--it is about what people will buy. The typical rice-grinder rider is 16-30 yrs old and doesn't have a lot of extra cash. Neither Polaris, Harley, BMW, or Ducatti can build a hyper performance bike cheaper than the Japanese. I mean cheaper in in both senses of the word--less expensive and chinsey. So the other manufacturers also choose to maintain their quality and reputations and not go there. BMW and Ducatti build performance bikes that are extremely uncomfortable and super fast, but at a premium price (S1000RR is over 30K). Ducatti doesn't even publish the price of the superleggera on its website (must be scary high). So most Americans, once they hit 35 or so and have some money are no longer interested in trying to survive a 160mph crash on a motorcycle, but want a machine with some character (toys are made of plastic), that is reliable and comfortable, that they can cover greater distances in style. Japan is the size of California, and most European countries are even smaller--so they generally don't travel as far even to the grocery store or their local beer joint (most actually can walk there). So it is not about just price and performance, but about aesthetics, comfort, practicality and emotion. In order to build a quality motorcycle in the USA, you have to spend a lot of money: unions, wages, benefits and some of the toughest environmental and safety controls in the world. Thus, Harley has to target the monied folks and cater to their tastes to sell. As you point out--they like what's iconic, air-cooling, push rods etc. The truly amazing engineering at Harley Davidson, is that even with the huge disadvantages of all the costs I outlined above, they produce high quality, price competitive motorcycles in their model ranges in the USA! That, too, means a lot to patriotic good hearted Americans knowing that their motorcycle was not manufactured or assembled in a third world country by workers paid slave wages. BTW, Harley just came out with a 1250cc liquid cooled V-Twin and most likely will be using it on other models besides just the Pan-America.

Yet another brilliant video from Ryan F9! I used to ride an ‘07 Sportster and it was a real crowd pleaser with that V-twin sound and dripping with style. Unfortunately, it was was slow with ungainly handling, and I practically had to make an appointment on my calendar to stop. Compared to my new 2020 Triumph T-120, the HD felt like I was riding Fred Flintstone’s car (seriously, it felt like I had to put my feet down on the road to slow or stop). Like the Indian, my Bonneville is a 1200cc bike making 80 HP. Triumph did this by using water cooling (aided by old school cooling fins) and reducing weight on moving parts inside the motor to raise the rev limit. For 2021 they raised it even higher and shaved off about 7kg between the engine and new aluminum wheels (with twin Brembos up front)! Also, the Triumph comes standard with ABS, traction control, heated grips, center stand, cruise control, and ride-by-wire throttle with selectable ride modes. Compared to the Bonnie and Indian, the HD belongs in the Museum of Jurassic Technology.

No lie though even if it is just for looks and style I can't help but love the indian scout, ooh and that sound, those fatty tires, it is a bit of art and i think people just appreciate it, at least to some extent. Like you say, the indian of today doesnt sacrifice as much as.. Some other bikes.., a little low and a little less comfortable than other bikes but not so much so as to despise the design

Yea, I got the Indian FTR 1200 (bike at the very end) because it was so unique. I even checked Harley to see if they had anything...they did not. ;)
P M Acum 11 Zile
Being low is not antiquated. It's about mindset. Being relaxed. When I started riding (rebel 250 that I drove all over America) it was about freedom and seeing what's around me. Then we fall into the trap of more performance and we lose something along the way. I do think to be safe it's wise to have a bit of performance, my rebel could barely get out of its own way. Harley's are overpriced. Indian kinda is too. But I think cruisers will come back, at least one last time.

Harley made a quality bike in the first half of the twentieth century. Since then, America has by far been the worst motorcycle producers. Compared to Japan, Germany, Italy and England, America is an embarrassment for motorcycle manufacturing. But the cruiser is pure American and HD is king. They can put a turd on wheels( which they do) and American knuckleheads eat it up like it was mana from heaven.

This is like comparing apples and pears ...if you want hammering low rev instant torque you take a Sportster if you want high rev delayed torque, with not enough lean angle clearance though, you take a Scout. The real problem is because of emission control the Sportster will be phased out and there is no substitute in sight.Already not available anymore in Europe!
