It would have been good to know which motor you took the oil from for the Harley. The pic looked like a sportster. I'd be curious to see how the M8 motor would have done in this test.

In India, during a school examination, students, as a last resort to score a few more points, will try to ensure the utmost neat hand writing in their exam papers. Its called "getting extra marks for neat handwriting". That is Royal Enfield on their best behavior for the new foreign market 😆🍻

This is a great video and very interesting. But there is a critical piece of information missing. That is whether we are comparing liquid cooled engines with air cooled engines. Why is this important, you may ask? Because air cooled engines operate over a much wider temperature range, whereas liquid cooled engines are thermostatically controlled, getting up to a precise engine temperature and staying within a much tighter temperature band than an air cooled engine. In order to accommodate the wider temperature range, the engine must be made with wider tolerances. Wider tolerances in manufacture will result in an engine that doesn't last as long. The fact that Harley Davidson is within the VDA 19 margin of error referenced in the video, speaks pretty well of their manufacturing process. Interestingly absent is Indian. So really, we should all be riding liquid cooled bikes if the overwhelming objective of motorcycling is to have the longest lasting engines.

So this begs a question.....how does flushing the factory fluids out when you purchase the bike change the result? Would the second oil change harbor the same sad results for chinese and italian motors? Hmm, interesting thought. I loved the video! Wish I had the capabilities to test this as I picked up a chinese bike recently.

@da da No, Engineers are Indians too, these bikes are designed and made in Chennai Tamil Nadu, India. One of my friend's brother is also an Engineer in RE. There is only another manufacturing plant in UK and they make only non critical components, Engines are only made in India and exported to UK manufacturing plant.

particles in engine oil dont mean much. If its just factory contamination found before the oil filter - nobody really cares about it. Maybe KTMs oil is clean due to leaking out all the time? ;)

I like but this is one of the more flawed tests you have done. No mention of the model of the bikes the oil was sampled from..... Not all models are made in the same factory or county and sometimes the oil is added by the dealer. Also what are the conditions the bike was ridden in before the oil was removed. Awesome test, flawed execution. But you knew that so I like it!

TheWonderfulStevieP Acum 16 Zile
The Enfield first service is 350 miles, Triumph 500 miles and Yamaha 600 miles. They all run wet clutches and that's the source of a lot of particulates, which might explain the Enfield topping the table. It's still a pleasant surprise, because my 2006 Enfield is an absolute dog's dinner. Though even on that the engine oil stays pretty clean because the primary drive and clutch are in a separate oil bath, with the shattered remains of the starter sprag.

PunkRokkMonkey Acum 17 Zile
This is a great test video! Well thought out and executed. I work in a shop and while this is super-informative, this also piques my curiosity of what is going on internally during those "break-in" miles. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that these vehicle break-in periods affect each of these engines differently. Some good/some bad. What would be really interesting--and a GREAT follow-up video--would be lab results from the same manufacturer's bikes at their second oil change (i.e. their first post break-in service)!

good video. but to be really "scientific" here you should have test it on at least 4 or 5 diff engines from the brand you are talking about, then, you should have serviced them with with special additives to remove "dust", then make them run another couple thousands miles and then do the test again....

Very interesting video. Were these samples from Chinese or German built BMW's? May have something to do with the initial dry run every new uninstalled BMW engine gets. So the majority of dirt entered during assembly is already removed. Not sure though if the oil is replaced after this dry run. Sampling of oil is also an art in itself. A lot of times contamination is introduced during sampling. Curious how many different oil samples resulted in these conclusions.

Hey Ryan, what a great video, thank you! A quick note for the sake of scientific method however, which you always embrace; All samples should ideally be de-identified to avoid bias. It may seem like an overkill in this case, but still, a double blind study ensures human factor does not interfere with outcome. As a Triumph, KTM and Honda owner, I was elated at these results :-)
