First bike was a Honda Shadow 650, because it's what I could afford. Then I got a Suzuki Intruders LC VL1500 project bike, because it was what I could afford. Years later I got a pimped out eighteen year old Harley, because it was what I could afford. Funny thing, after two years the Harley is gone and the Honda and Suzuki are still sitting in the garage. I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with Harley, it's a classic company. It's just not great at a lot of things. The main problem I have is I don't but things based on brand loyalty, I buy things based on functionality, frugality, and personal ideals. Government protectionism goes pretty hard against my ideals, a company has to succeed on it's own merits. If it doesn't then it wasn't meant to be.

Note- Harley has partnership with Hero ( an Indian 🇮🇳 company which broke contract with Hero-Honda and become hero motor corp ) . Harley is working with hero to build small bikes in India in hero factory, Harley has such a good reputation but there bikes are super expensive and consume a lot of fuel , twice a car consumed and Royal Enfield dominates the classis premium bike market . Honda has also launched a royal enfied 350 rival CB350 , and I bought it. so it’s like a bike WAR going in India which pushes brands Like Kawasaki, Honda , Suzuki , Harley , Yamaha, to go back in time and building retro styled bikes which are affordable and most imp fuel efficient. So litterly after having speed wars and super bike wars all these Great companies are building old retro bikes with less technology and old engines which they produced 50 years ago. All due to royal field and hero , trust me it’s a competition in India and brands for hungry to share the old flavoured pie 🥧 .

People still love harley, specially here in India, that too younger audience. The price simply makes it inaccessible. 100% import duty + road tax and registration fees makes the more than double the price. Also quality of bikes have been disappointing here in India. Iron 883 costs around 14000$ but you don't expect break cylinders failing due to engine heat is disappointing. Specially when American products are associated with quality and a name with such heritage.

And yet the value of any decent runner used non HD bike is up, no deals to be had, you cant get into MSF classes because they are booked, The non HD showroom floors are depopulated, Despite this demand for bikes, in the used listings the are 3 HD bikes for every non, the local HD dealer has a parking lot of new and used for sale. HD's new Dealer certified program is really silly in the face of this. What are they going to do? Buy up bikes nobody wants and finance them for a big markup? To who?

Local Harley dealership has about 15-20 bikes in the showroom, about half were new the other half used. Almost every bike had a hold or sold sign on it. I bet every other metric motorcycle dealerships wished they were "dying" as much as HD!

If you're a true motorcyclist, you don't bash people for having brands that don't you don't like. I'm a proud Harley owner PURELY for the sake of having my knees in the breeze. What happened to all the people who were in it just for the bikes?

A few years back I was thinking about buying a bike. A neighbors son spoke to me and said: "I know that you are thinking about buying another Harley-Davidson. But before you do take a look at bikes on the side of the road, and observe what bikes they are, cause they are not just making a phone call. They are arranging for a tow." So I followed his advice and saw that they were Harley-Davidsons broke down on the side of the road. They have to put dependability into their machines.

Between Boomers who won't retire or die (which limits upward mobility in hierarchies; the guy in charge of my employer [a Boomer biker, it so happens] has been in charge of it for more than 30 years!), god-awful student loans that became non-dischargeable in bankruptcy juuuust as we were getting ready to go to college, and the Great Recession kicking us in the balls just as we're supposed to be entering the workforce in a meaningful way, we're broke. Home ownership of my demographic is *still* sluggish and late, and most people emphasize owning a home over owning a motorcycle. I'm one of the oldest Millennials, pushing 40, a veteran, married with kids, and I *just* got to the point where I can seriously think about blowing money on something as frivolous and expensive as a motorcycle. Money's still a factor. And if I have the choice between $14k on a HD Iron or Indian Scout, or $10k on a lighter, fancier, competitive Honda Rebel 1100? It's not really a choice. And I think the marketing angle you suggest is wrong. No one buys a motorcycle because they want to meet nice people and take their best gal on a 45 mph ride to a park in bright colors as part of some sort of delightful PC multicultural fantasy. People buy motorcycles because 1) they're cheaper than cars and/or 2) they're cool. HD banked everything on #2. Well, I and most of my demographic cohort are pretty broke compared to our parents at this age. My dad bought his first house when he was ~26 and I still don't own one. #1 is a lot more relevant. And if I can find something that's both cheaper and cool? Sorry, Harley.

Cutting costs and closing dealerships and making it more difficult to get the "Dream bike" will be beneficial to them. I think back to the 90's and early 2000's and you had a waiting list to get them. They should have never built more factories, just added on to the existing ones and kept demand high. Also, they never would do what car dealerships would do, which is focus on the used HD market. Now, they are selling and financing used bikes, and doing much better.

Harley doesn't make a single 'cheap' A2 compliant bike ... So that's the European market over and done with.

Having ridden a lot of bikes over the years, including Harleys, which I found to be comfortable at normal highway cruising speeds. The problem though is that they do no accelerate well, they handle like dogshit, and their brakes can barely do the job. On top of that, they are expensive, and they are unreliable. By contrast, my 1982 Yamaha XJ1100 ran great, had bag loads of power, handled like a dream [for its age], and in the 125,000 kms that I put on it, all I needed to do was wash it, change the oil, and buy new tires when they wore out. To top it off, I bought that bike used in 1998 for $1500 when it had only 8,000 kms on the dial. I put 25k kms a year on that bike for the next 5 years and it never gave me an issue. I sold it for $1200. It was an awesome bike.

It wasn't that long ago when they treated you like it was a reward to purchase a over priced piece of junk. Keep making clothes HD.

I have a 15 year-old 2006 Twin-Cam 88 FLSTCI (Soft Tail). 42000 mile and the only replacement I had to make was to the ignition coil, battery and of course tires. My bike has mag wheel and Reinert exhaust. Looks and sounds great. I rode the Blue Ridge Parkway rount-trip in 2009, Sturgis in 2010 and still ride it every season here in New England. No problems with this bike. It is great.

Do I want to buy an over-weight farm tractor, with no engineering must-haves,like a Harley with hand gear shift, chain drive, and lots of noise, or do I buy a motorcycle designed by an aircraft engine manufacturer; light weight; with horizontal opposed cylinders; foot shift; full spring frame; shaft drive; quiet and elegant. The answer was very simple. I bought a 500 cc BMW. The whole Harley Bad-Boy mystique turned me off. Harley's are such ancient machines that it's amazing they have stayed alive this long. If you look at Italian, German, and Japanese machines, they all are state-of-the-art technical marvels. The choice is easy; loud farting; overweight antiques catering to people I don't want to associate with vs. modern design.

I'm 41 years old I Road Kawasaki sport bikes back in my twenties the past two years I started looking in the Harley Davidsons and Cruiser type of bikes from other manufacturers even Indian and I got to say Harley Davidsons look the best of me I'm just not a fan of how any of the other bites look at all but the prices are too high I'm interested in the street bob and that bike after taxes and tags is close to $17,000 that's just too much is that bike was priced around 9500 bucks I would have already had it in my driveway a year ago

I have been riding for 45 years but have never ridden a HD bike. Nothing against them, just have not had the chance. I have spoken with a few HD riders over the years just to get a feel for what they like about the bikes. I am interested in performance details. Without fail, they all want to talk about being a part of a cool community and the joys of riding an American icon. Oh yeah . . . and lots of cool HD stuff like belt buckles. OK, never mind.

I rode my Kawasaki to the dealer to test ride a XR1200. The salesman, very nice, said he would fix me up but, he knew I would not buy it since a rode there on a Kawasaki and I had mentioned that I was an engineer.

1 Harley Got Rid of Buell just people went nuts for Dual Sports. My 1st time into Harley, I was looking for a New (last one) Ulyssis. I dont like the street racer style--but Buell was an awesome Street Racer (emphasis on street--but its tune-able). Harley didn't take Buell serious.
