What happens when you tell a bunch of car designers to go build a motorcycle? Well, this. The Honda PC800 Pacific Coast. Overlooked genius or just another Failblog entry?

At the beginning he called it a VT800! Which is does share the motor with the VT800 Shadow. I owned one as my only vehicle for a couple of years. It is a great commuter, and a better daily rider than the Goldwing. Reliable, good gas mileage, easy to wash, funky, and oh yeah, that trunk. And for the 'scooter' moniker, many PC800 owners also own a Honda Helix.

well it doesn't surprise me none it's happening with all the cool cars also everybody thinks they need a big giant truck or SUV or Harley Davidson to blend with the sheep I just ride a scooter it has the wind protection and storage and after riding standard motorcycles my whole life the CVT transmission is a nice change it definitely grows on you

Not sure how they thought a 600lb motorcycle was relevant to first time motorcycle owners, but they got a lot right for people who prefer riding to working on motorcycles.

I always assumed it was meant as a re-placement/re-styling of the Goldwing: Not all that chrome to clean, 80s futurism à la Star Wars (blocky with rounded corners, off-white); probably someone had just seen Akira and made this?

Honda started the push to infiltrate the car driver market in 1986 with the introduction of the Helix CN250 scooter. The first scooter with "feet forward" riding position (sitting really), glove compartment, handbrake and a boot (trunk). It was so successful that it remained in production until 2009 in Japan. Very comfortable and capable of long distance touring (at 70 mph top speed) and surprisingly agile despite its very long wheelbase (1,625 mm)

I remember, back in the day, saying to some motorcyclists how cool I thought the PC800 was. They just looked at me like I was daft. I didn't realize it weighed 640 lbs, exactly twice the weight of my CB300R. I think Honda did eventually succeed with this concept with the Silverwing.

I'd argue that maxi luxury scooters are exactly that. Like the Majestic, Morpheus, PCX and so on. At top trim they feature cruise control, stereo speaker systems, full upholstery, trunks in some cases, ensconced and backlit dashboards, remote lock and start, and some of the more modern ones are gyroscopic-assist. Perhaps not what the average motorcyclist is looking for, but would sweeten the transition for car drivers. Edit: I'd like to add that this video was a true work of art, the synthwave, wipe effects, aspect ratio, coloring, VCR-style grain and audio mixing were a delight!

Some of the stuff mentioned wasn't new on the PC, like the TRAC anti-dive that was introduced in '83. And maintenance access wasn't a whole lot worse than GoldWings of the same era. Oh, and if they were such a failure why did they bring them back for 5 more years?

Nice.. that 750 four in the ad.. I grew up on the back of one of those... My DAD had one with an aftermarket front sprocket... I think he went 1 tooth smaller in order to give it more torque and rev faster when moving, but dropped a couple mph over all... I miss that bike. As for the pacific coast... I once jumped one of those on the highway... It was confusing for both of us.. He said he needed a jump so I said get the battery exposed and he opened the trunk.. and he looked so confused when I pulled up in my beetle and opened the hood (he was walking around back to the trunk.. the beetle had a diesel in the front in 98 :D ) We both got a laugh about our vehicles NOT meeting eachothers expectations, had a good chat, and then we parted ways.

Bought one of these to introduce the wife to motorcycling. seemed less scary to her than the BMW. Hung on to it for a couple years and used it as a second motorcycle so friends and family could ride with us. check tire pressure, add fuel and just ride for 10's of thousands of miles. I hate to say but way more reliable than my RT that was newer by 2 decades! BRB scanning craigslist for a red one

I don't own a motorcycle but damn look at that trunk size, I don't honestly like wearing helmets, not because they look bad but they do but because they have to be bulky to protect your nogin. This seems like a great motorcycle to put the safety equipment in, hoping it fits and some other cargo like breakdown tools.

Honda is/has been the most innovative company in the history of motorcycling. I have ridden Hondas starting in 1969, fifty years later - I now have most of the bikes I rode over the years, ten vintage Hondas from 1971 CB-750 to 2003 Gold Wing with the CBX, CB-1000 Custom, 1982 Gold Wing, Trail ST-110, CX 650 Silver Wing, CRF-230, Rebel 250... in between. My 1971 Honda CB-750 Four reached over 102,000, without opening the engine, just regular maintenance. They are extremely dependent and reliable machines - brilliantly designed. What an era the sixties-seventies were in terms of designs. I am glad to have lived it - the days when one would never let a fellow motorcyclist "broken down" on the side of a highway (usually an English bike or a Harley-Davidson). Peace be with you all and enjoy your weekend - it is supposed to be real nice in the North East! Ciao, L (ME/QC)
